Practice makes perfect...

yea! I have gotten so good in tennis. I remember how horrible I was just beginning of this summer but after playing today....yea! Earlier, I wouldn't even be able to hit consecutively but now I just couldn't stop hitting the ball! I am only beginning but still I was just impressed with how much I have improved just after practicing this summer!
Maybe I should join a tennis team! We'll see what my school has to offer. Its such a great workout and I like tennis!

Listening to Dr. Joy Brown on the radio at work, she mentioned how children learn very early on about their parents personalities and know who to turn to when they need a favorable answer.

This got me thinking about my family.

When we kids were younger, my sister, brother, and I, we knew what my dad said was the law. Even if my mom agreed on something we wouldn't get excited till' we confirmed that my dad was okay with our mom's decision. Only then would we actually go crazy with our plans.

But as we got into our teenage years, it seems our mom became more the decision maker...firm one at that. We won't breathe a sigh of relieve until we have made sure our mom is happy with the decision.

Before I realized this change I would first talk to my dad. Then would go to my mom and all I would say is "I could do this, this, and this because dad agreed to it." And I was shocked when I realized this wasn't enough anymore.

Now, we don't need to hold our breath for either of our parents. Yes, we do talk to our parents about situation that is in our lives but it is for advice rather than permission.

Its just amazing how many different changes we go through with our parents and relationships in general. The greatest accomplishment is when you can sustain a authentic, open relationship, with all the ups and downs, and make it last a lifetime.

Olive Garden....and Movies.

Went to Olive garden for lunch. I hate it when the dishes I order at restaurants are too simple that I feel I could wipe it up on my own at home. That was the case with the dish I ordered.

Did you know that movies are now $9 a show! My friend and I were at the theaters getting our tickets for Miami Vice. Heard not too many good things about it...but my friend wanted to see it. We were using the little ticket kiosk because that would the faster choice to get our tickets. Anyways when I saw that the 5:25 p.m. showing was 9 bucks on the computer screen...I said "what the heck......$9....WOW...are you kidding me???.......nick its $9...are you sure about this". When I heard "NINE DOLLARS!!!??!!!" from the next kiosk" I said "ditch?" and she pressed "cancel".

That's just too much. I rather rent.

The movie Kung Fu Hustle. Stephen Chow director and star.

let me just say: AMAZING!

I absolutely enjoyed this movie! It was wonderful. Fabulous. imagaintive. creative. crazy. love it.

The entire DVD has wonderful features. It took me about 5 hours to get through the movie and all of its extras. Its summer...Especially on weekends....I have the time.....what can I say.

I kept wanting to know how! How does this director do this. How is he so imaginative. How does he take such unsophisticated characteristics and transform them into phenomenal status. Amazing.what this guy comes up with. I only watched this movie of his...and I can't wait to watch his other ones!

yawn....

Three things to yawn about:

--My block party attendance at my neighbor's house. I never knew how boring a conversation could be. I really don't know why I went...my mom didn't even force me...but I just wanted to go..so my mom and I did. What a bad idea that was! It was a big gossip section about the neighbors a block away from us. Who got drunk last month, received citations because their lack of care for their property, and how the neighborhood was thirty years ago. Now, these topics aren't at all uninteresting but when it is repeatedly discussed over and over then it became..so frustrating.

One of the neighbors kept going on and on about his corvette...for about 45 minutes...I thought I heard myself snoring...

I called in sick to work yesterday. I was so proud that I had never called in sick for the past 2 1/2 years since I started this job. However, yesterday I was a little tired and needed to just relax at home. I had some plans in the morning and I wasn't too sure if I'll be too tired to go to work after getting those things done. So I just thought why not be safe and call in sick.
The relaxation turned into boredom only awhile later. I walked around the park and moved room to room trying to find something to do. I could get bored so easily.
I just couldn't relax at all.

hello?!? Tamil please....

The past week I been on the phone talking to various people about my dad's 401k distributions.

Its all very new to me. I had no idea what 401K was about...honestly I thought the government was rewarding us for working...keeping the economy going...free money! I know I am really clueless..these type of teachings should be a requirement in all universities!

A class on "various paper work for every step of your life." Something...anything!

Okay so I obviously wouldn't even know where to begin to ask the questions that would make my dad happy. So when I called his last employer I requested a Tamil translator...and we got someone on the phone with us in less than five minutes! This was so new to me!

My dad talked to a lady in Colombo. Every question my dad asked she would translate it in English to my dad's employer and then translate the answer in Tamil to my dad.

The thought that we are all so becoming globally connected within a few minutes boggles my mind! So cool!

Yeap!

"If you are a woman between the ages of 20 and 40 living anywhere on the globe, you are part of the most educated, professionally empowered, internationally empowered, international generation of women ever. It's an inspiring story in a world full of violence and insecurity---a generation of women poised to take the reins of global leadership like no other generation in history."

delicious!

Isn't this fabulous. My own pear tree in the backyard! Is just amazing what things will grow where! The more time I spent outdoors it makes me think if I want to live in a state that only has few months of summer. Nine pears so far on a small tree...only about 5 feet tall!

Who Me?!?! A Speeder!??! well yes...

I couldn't find a picture of an Asian police officer...

I was pulled over by an Asian police officer...I don't know why I just expected it would be a white guy...so I was surprised to see an Asian cop. I should of known that today there would be a lot of cops out there just waiting to catch some drunk drivers! Well, I was not a drunk rather a speeder. As I looked back and saw the lights flashing...my thought was "Wow, finally it is happening to me...after all these years of not getting pulled over...the day has finally arrived." So police officer approached my vehicle.

Asian cop with sunglasses:
He asked if I knew why he pulled me over....

me (confused):
hmmmmm....I don't know.......Officer....why did you?

Asian cop with sunglasses:

He stated that on a 40 mph road I was going 53 and my speed was climbing..

Me (surprised):
really.....wow........missed my exit to work because of construction.......then I took a left when I should have taken a right.....I am late for work.......I don't know.....I am late for work....its so hot....only worked at this location just for a month...I am still getting used to this area.....hmmmmmm...

He left to check my information out.
Since I never been pulled over before he just gave me a warning...and told me to watch my speed.

As I was driving away I wondered if I should have asked him if he was Korean and watched any Korean dramas. But I think that would have been a little inappropriate...its not like we were talking about coolest places to hang out, movies we liked to watch, summer plans....I mean this dude was pretty serious and had a gun plus lots of other dangerous and hurtful things to spray/hit me with.

The Devil Wears Prada!

The Devil Wears Prada

So I am the first one to admit that this script has been done a million times...A recent college graduate woman, played by Anne Hathaway, moves to New York city to save the world as a journalist. Things don't go as she planned when she has to settle for a job at none other than a fashion magazine...ahhhhhhhh (horror screams...I wouldn't mind that job). Meryl Streep plays her devil of a boss and she does a fantastic performance! I loved all the little jokes that are just naturally set in the movie and scenes of New York City were really nice!

I feel like sharing...

.

Depending on the situation I can develop patience like nobody’s business! If I have something that needs to be done…I could convince myself that I could work through whatever obstacles that comes my way…and almost always get whatever I need done. I could stop the frustration that begins to build and become completely clam and focused. This unfortunately only happens once in a while…but when it does it is such a great feeling!

I have the ability to be calm when others are not. When an environment becomes hectic I could actually stop reacting to that and react in a way that is opposite of that environment.

I love paper items! I am obsessed actually! I love journals, scrapbooks, stationeries, letters, notebooks…everything and anything that oozes creativity. I mean sure someone could have a notebook and not do anything about it. But a blank notebook---is a template to make it into whatever you want. I have so many stationeries in boxes that I think I could start a store myself. I am trying to use all of my old papers so I could start buying new ones.

Lately, I like to be around people and not talk so much. I just don’t want to make small talks if I don’t have to. I rather be more observant and take in the surrounding. Before however I was so involved in making everyone comfortable and I thought small talks eases the surrounding but now “no, thanks.” I don’t want to try so hard at having conversations. It should come naturally. This is not being stuck-up.

If I ever had a full weekend off without any plans…this hasn’t happened in the past 2+ years. If I come to a position where I have consecutive weekends off…consecutive…I am going to watch movies all weekend. Stay in bed all weekend and watch movies!

(Isn't the flower beautiful?! From my front yard!)

moth

My sister recently started a job in a lab where she and her coworkers work with a lot of moths. Her company is responsible for producing the best moth eggs and selling them around the country. Who knew…huh?!? Every night however she has been having these terrible nightmares! She dreams that her bed, face, her entire body is surrounded by moths…as she describes “suffocating me.” She jumps out of bed every night as she throws her comforter on the floor. She was telling her coworkers about her nightmares other day while they laughed and sympathized with her situation.

One of her coworker mentioned that her nightmares could be worse! He told her that their lab used to employee a woman who also had nightmares. Not only did she dream that moths were all over her but they had her in a cage and were doing the experiments on her that she was doing to them everyday. *Used to employee her* every important!

Yikes!?

I have no idea how that dream could be like? But I’ll be completely scared.

soccer!

Loved watching the world cup soccer game today!
I didn’t even know about the world cup until couple of people mentioned it in class and at work!
Now I am hooked!
The game today was between Argentina and Mexico.
And Argentina won!
It was fantastic to watch!
Each team scored one point the first ten minutes of the game and after a long time Argentina scored in overtime!
Yea!
I want to participate in more sports and also go watch teams play!

I went to the post office today because I needed to sent a package. With this package I wanted to put stamps on it instead of just a ticket stating what the price will be. The price of the package turned out to be $5.15 so I bought a few sheets of 37 cents stamps and stepped to a counter to place 15 or so stamps on my package. I was in my own little world figuring out the best way to arrange all these stamps on my package when someone took hold of my shoulders. Not only hold my shoulders but shook me really hard. The few seconds this lasted I thought "Wow, whoever that is must be suprised to see me." I turned around and saw a face I never saw before. Then I thouhgt maybe I know this man so I said this "ohhhhh...HI there! (giving the impression that I knew him.....when I completely didn't) Well he looked indian so I thought maybe I may have met him before. I am really bad with remembering faces anyways. This man looked at me and said "Ohh I thought you were my niece" at that time I finally figured out that I had no idea who this man was so I said "ohhh...it's okay." As I went back in line I couldn't look at this man in the face because I was still in a little shock. He kept apologizing and I said that was okay. "He kept saying your behind looks just like my niece" ..okay...

Then I saw someone from high school. It was intersting meet because I had no idea what her name was and she didn't remember mine either. At first I thought her name was destiny but her name was actually Gifted. How could I forget a name like that? It was strange event though. I mean in high school it seemed that the school was the whole world yet after four years I can't even remember a person I went to school with for YEARS. When she asked for my name I said it the way it should be pronounced with utmost confidence..it seemed to me that she didn't even recognize my name. My name has been pronounced so many different ways and I never corrected it until only a few years ago. Now I don't really give a chance for people to pronounce my name however way it suits them. No excuses anymore! I learned the English language to the best of my ability atleast you could say my name to the best of your ability.

Then I saw a teacher from high school...I never took a high school class with her..so I didn't say anything.

In conclusion, if you want to catch up on your old life...maybe consider going to the post office. Its a great hangout...let's get the party started at the post office?!?!

I can't relax at all. I think its a Sri Lankan thing. I was talking to another Sri Lankan and he mentioned the same thing...how his mom can't even sit down for one minute without finding something to do. I don't blame Sri Lanka...but maybe my parents.

I started a new journal on my birthday. I have tons of little notes, papers, greeting cards, pictures...that are all over my room (tucked between books, under my bed, in shoe boxes) so I got a book to just tape everything in it. Aside from these little collections so far the theme I been writing has been "I want (-----) in life." After filling pages of this book already...I started to wonder if this is healthy. I mean should I be greatful for what I have than always wanting something more?
But then I decided to ignore this thought...because I don't think there is anything wrong with putting down ideas, wishes, and working on them. I am greatful for all I have. But there is more to see, do, be in this life and I want it.

Nacho Libre ---Funny movie! I went to the 10 A.M. show which was really nice! I'll do that again. There were only few people in the theater and had the full afternoon to do other stuff.

My Birthday...!!!

Permanence. Perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstaclies, discouragemnets, and impossibilities: it is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.

Long day...I had classes all morning.
Both of my parents were home so for my birthday they made crab curry...which was SO GOOD!
That was my request.
Walked around the neighborhood for one hour...so relaxing...
Had ice cream cake..I think I might appreciate it more tomorrow.
I was so happy that my professor announced that we were only having a hour of lecture....and not two

I got this beautiful necklace recently. I wanted something that representated New York...I kinda regretted that I didn't get something like this in New York...but I did get few other pieces in Little Italy from this 80 year old lady one late night.

It was so nice to come home last night...and not have to set the alarm for this morning. I reached for my cell phone to set the alarm...then I thought "WHY! I really don't need to..."

So that's what I did...slept half of the day.

WINDFALL

I have a strong hatred for the show that's going be premiering soon….WINDFALL! Haven't watched one episode yet but I just can't stand the promotion for that show. …20 friends…364 millions dollars…..the deceptions, the passion, bluh bluh bluh!! Damn show, Damn NBC, Damn Power ball!!

(Annoying dude #1) "…I am going to go buy a football team…can I pick up something for you…?". (yes…dude..you could do something for me…go to hell!!!).

(Annoying dude #2 )"…if your wildest dream came true…will I be in it?" (NO!...and "ohh yea…please go away")

(Annoying woman #1) "life isn't fair…thank god…..(something like this)… (I hate her)" Just the whole show gets on my nerve.

I am so tired.
I am putting in too many hours this summer at work.
Feel so tired (I said that already…)
I need a vacation!

I watched The Break-up a few days ago and it was good.
All I was thinking was “Jennifer Aniston better not disappoint me again” and she didn’t.
It was an enjoyable night at the movies.

What’s up with Al Gore? Every time I see that guy on CNN he looks like an actor playing the role of a politician. I don’t know!

Sunshine & rain, monkeys getting married?

Few weeks ago it was a bright, sunny day and I was sitting in my car with all the windows open and naturally enjoying the day. All of a sudden it started to rain..and the first thought that came to mind was "Monkies are getting married today." I remember when I was young that someone told me this in Sri Lanka and I never forgotten this little saying. But I honestly had no idea what it meant or where this saying came from. For a long time I thought it was a Sri Lankan saying but that doesn't seem like the case. I googled it and found this site.

[Q] From Gary Williams: “I wonder if you can shed some light on the phrase a monkey’s wedding? When I was a child growing up in South Africa, my mother would use the saying when we had rain and sunshine at the same time. My wife tells me that she knows the saying from her family, which is mainly of Irish blood.”

[A] It’s certainly a well-known South African expression. A related Afrikaans word, jakkalstrou, jackals wedding, also exists. The South African English version is the direct equivalent (what linguists call a loan translation) of the Zulu umshado wezinkawu, a wedding for monkeys.

Back in 1998, Bert Vaux, Assistant Professor of Linguistics at Harvard, asked members of the LINGUIST List about expressions for this weather phenomenon (he called it a sunshower, a lovely name, which I’ve never heard but which I’m told is common in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and also in parts of Britain, though—oddly enough—it appears in few dictionaries). He was told that similar sayings or proverbs exist in a surprising number of languages. A great many of them have animal associations, often to do with marriage (or, as one respondent commented, that activity for which the word marriage may be considered a suitable euphemism).

In Arabic, it seems the term is “the rats are getting married”, while Bulgarians prefer to speak of bears doing so; Mr Vaux was told that in Hindi it becomes “the jackal’s wedding”; in Calabria, it is said that “when it rains with sun, the foxes are getting married”, for which there’s a similar phrase in Japanese; Koreans refer to tigers likewise; there’s even an English dialect term, “the foxes’ wedding”, known from the south west, it seems. However, in Polish, the saying is that “when the sun is shining and the rain is raining, the witch is making butter”.

Several languages refer to devils instead, as in Turkish: “the devils are getting married”. There’s a well-known version in the American South, at least among older people: “The devil’s behind his kitchen door beating his wife with a frying pan”, usually shortened just to “The devil’s beating his wife”.

With so many examples from different languages, it is certainly possible that there’s also an Irish version, though I haven’t come across one.

However, I am baffled as to why and how such phrases should have arisen. There’s clearly a common association that is understood by widely divergent language communities, so it seems to be something at a level below that of superficial culture. But what is it?

More questions than answers...?!?

When I have a house I would want it to be like this! I just absolutely love the bright, beautiful, amazing, colors!

I watched Mission Impossible III and enjoyed it a lot! There were just too many cool things about this movie that it was exciting to watch! I don’t watch too many action flicks but I am glad I did this one! I still don’t like Tom Cruise!

Uneventful Sunday:
Woke up really REALLY late, ran to get flowers for my mom, had lunch, and went to work.
What an exciting day isn’t it!? I worked in the afternoon today and I enjoyed this more than working in the mornings! I might do this more often.

I keep forgetting that it’s only the second week of May and no wonder it has been raining most days. I keep thinking its June and every time it rains…..I keep thinking “It’s June…why the hell is it raining?”

I don’t understand why it is expected for a husband to give his wife a mother’s day gift? I think it should be children giving thanks to their mothers, not the whole world needing to give gifts to all women who have children! Hello! Your husband isn’t your child!

I really like watching this season of Apprentice…more than the other seasons. Probably because I have this inner competitive mode these past few months…so I like to see how the individuals compete with each other. I also love to see the group dynamics! Then I like to make comments about what each group did wrong. I had to do this paper for my interpersonal communication class on the movie “The Old Settler” with 4 other classmates. I absolutely hated it! After we completed our paper each of us had to write a paper on our interpersonal communications on this task. I went on and on about the show apprentice and how I would have probably been fired the first show. During the week or so we had to work on the paper no one totally got my ideas!! I would say something which I thought made absolute sense but everyone else was like “hmmm..I guess so…but let’s come up with something else.” It was so frustrating! I really don’t like teamwork…I like to be assigned a task and be left alone or I like to be the leader and be in a setting where I could develop my own ideas with my group members behind me. My Ideas!

I always thought that I would love to have a group…be in a group…but I just love to be left alone! Probably I get so attached to people that soon they become attached to me…and then I want to move away from this hold…or something of this nature! I don’t conform nor do I like the feeling that I need to conform. You could be in a group and not conform but then are you really in the group?

They are too beautiful!

Yea! I am done with all my finals! That was some semester! Went too fast and I am going to miss all the people I met and all my classes! I want to workout as much as possible during my time off, enjoy the little things that I didn’t have time to when I had classes, and cook! I want to make something very different…something I have never tried before. Oh yea…and slowly start studying for the next semester…

If you keep staring at it...it gets funnier!

Isn’t this a funny picture! I remember years ago I went to get a shot…just like this one! I was 8 years old and I was so confident that I wasn’t going to cry. Well, when the nurse put me on to a chair and started folding my sleeves back…I let out this huge scream!! I cried “bloody hell!” There were few other kids around my age sitting in the waiting area…and they all started to cry too because they heard me...probably thought I was being tortured! I didn’t stop crying at all…I just continued on and on until the nurse was done!

Random Thoughts...

.
Accessorizing it’s so tough! I mean you don’t want to feel like you are wearing everything in your jewelry box yet you want to wear your favorite pieces. So I admire all those who could accessorize with much jewelry yet look like you are not over the top!

I went and had McDonalds the other day after a long time. This time I actually sat at McDonalds and had a meal, I don’t get how some people could have McDonalds every week! It was such an unsatisfactory lunch! I’ll stick with my subway.

Talking about food..........

Few days ago I was mowing the backyard and something so disgusting happened! I stepped on poop. I swear it smelled just like human poop! I was running all around the yard screaming “Oh God! It’s not dog poop it’s human poop!” “Help Me!!!” It was all on my shoes, pants, and back of my legs.
I thought I was tough when it came to disgusting things but…when you have poop on your legs and swear it’s human poop…then you’ll really know wheather you are tough or not.

I became this little girl that was running around yelling “Help Me! Someone!!”

But it’s hard to think that a human could have actually done something like that in our yard…but you never know what kind of weirdoes are out there. I am hoping it’s just a dog!
